Summertime is the perfect time to go on a nice vacation. The last thing you want to do is worry about your home and whether or not you took care of something before leaving. We’ve put together a list of things to do before you leave so you can forget about the stress and focus on the relaxation time that lies ahead. Here are 5 important things that should be done before you leave for your amazing vacation.

  • Make sure you repair anything that could really cost or cause damage while you are gone. Check for any water leaks that may become a problem. A tiny leak in a pipe under a sink can be a major problem if not fixed right away. Catching and repairing it early will save a lot of money later. Catching it before your vacation is even more important.
  • Set your thermostat to a temperature that fits the season. If it is summer then you want to make sure that you set the temperature so that your home won’t be too musty smelling and even have mold producing while you’re away. During the winter make sure it’s warm enough that your pipes won’t freeze. Another way to keep your HVAC from running so much is to leave your blinds and curtains closed during the summer but open during the winter to let the sunshine in and help warm your house.
  • Unplug small appliances such as your hair dryer, toaster, and coffee maker. Having appliances plugged in when not in use uses electricity, that’s money on your next bill that you can be saving. Your coffee maker, for example, probably has a lighted display that tells you what time it is; unplug it to reduce your energy output while on vacation.
  • Shut off the water source on your washer, toilet, and dishwasher. You don’t want to come home to a flooded room because you never thought to turn the water off. If your hose is older than three years there is a possibility that the hose can burst while the water supply is in the “on” position the water will still flow through even when it’s not in use.
  • Lock all doors and windows to make your home as burglar-proof as possible. It’s best to do it the night before so you’re not scrambling around right before it’s time to leave and make sure that nobody opens them afterward.

Even though there are several other important things that need to be done before you go on vacation- such as stopping your mail, paying the bills that may be due while you’re away, cleaning out the refrigerator etc. We gave you a list of five items that some homeowners wouldn’t have normally thought of.
